Vallican Whole Community Centre ~ exterior doors
For over 45 years the Vallican Whole Community Centre has been a community hub in the Slocan Valley ~ and much of that time, well loved, hand crafted, exterior doors greeted young and old. It was our formidable task to replace them with new, more energy efficient beautiful doors that the community felt comfortable with.
There was a lot riding on getting the design right. While we tend to have a clean, modern aesthetic, that clearly wouldn’t suit this warm, woody community centre with its counter culture history. So we set our mind to designing something that would honour the tradition of this special building and the wooded 11 acres it is on ~ and this lovely forest of cherry inlaid trees on birch doors was born. The trees of differing sizes and shapes represent all walks of life that gather in the building…right down to the odd tree with a scar or chunk missing out of it. It takes all kinds to make a forest and a community.
It was an honour to work on this project ~ and even old timers who were very attached to the old doors were thrilled with the result!
